New Year New You

Here we are at the start of a new year and for the first time in many years there is feeling of apprehension in the air. Will there be a third world war with death and destruction or will there be peace and happiness? The signs are not good and yet there is also a feeling of hope underlying the tension, but it is human nature to be optimistic. After all tomorrow will be a better day. Reports from around the world suggest that there is an up-swelling of spirituality which could counter the evil and ill will that seem to be ever-present and that this has been predicted. Some even refer to passages from holy books that appear to bear out how these unfolding events will conclude.
Three astrological friends of mine are all saying that we, the people, the planet and the solar system are going through a period of change which will ultimately usher in an era of love and goodwill but before that happens we have to endure some torrid times. Not quite Armageddon. Their interpretation of this is that it is not the end of the world per se but the end of an era. Apparently these eras last for about 2,000 years at which point there is a cosmic alignment and this alignment has a bearing on events on earth. They have also agreed that there is much evil and ill will about and the perpetrators of this know that their day of reckoning is at hand, hence the reason for the dramatic escalation of the past few years in events which are not conducive to human happiness. Apparently what we are witnessing are the death throes of their system, their rule and their control which they will not willingly surrender. The consensus is that good will, love and spirituality will ultimately triumph if mankind eschews the materialistic, selfish, hedonistic lifestyle and embraces a more spiritual lifestyle, living in harmony with his inner being, his fellow man, his environment, nature, the universe and the cosmos. The concept here is that collective spiritualism can overcome the hatred and evil that seems to pervade every aspect of life today. The process, however, begins on an individual basis and radiates outward affecting others positively on both a physical and a non- physical plane.
Since this process begins with the individual, it is imperative that each individual is mentally, emotionally and physically ready for this “rapture”. Interestingly, I got out my dictionary to see what was the actually definition of the word “rapture” and I was some-what surprised to find that the first definition says “the state of mind resulting from feelings of high emotion; joyous ecstasy”. The third definition, which the dictionary described as “archaic” (old fashioned) was the one that resonated with me. It was “the act of transporting a person from one state of existence to another”. Was it referring to a more spiritual transformation without actually saying so as the first one referred only to states of mind and emotions. So the rapture that the Christian Bible refers to could simply be the situation where a person reaches such a state of spiritual awareness that he or she becomes highly emotional with joy and elation. A “spiritual awakening”.
If we proceed on the premise that there is a physical, biological you made up of flesh and bones and that there is an intangible you made up of thoughts, experiences and memories and that the physical you is a support mechanism for the “real” you, so that you can survive in this state of existence then merely living and surviving is not really the essence of who or what you are. You are a spiritual being undergoing a physical experience and to derive maximum spirituality your biological body has to deliver quality nutrients to your organs, especially your brain. You want to be at your healthiest so that your moods, thoughts and actions are positive and uplifting. No matter how much we work on ourselves spiritually, our diet plays a very significant role in how we feel. A heavy, chemical-laden diet can actually make even the lightest spirit feel heavy. On the other hand, certain other types of meals can rapidly boost someone’s spirit, mind, and heart. Many spiritually minded people receive intuitive messages to delete certain foods or beverages from their diet. Others on the spiritual path lose their tolerance for low-frequency substances such as coffee or sugar. They develop sudden adverse reactions to ingesting these substances. With the hectic pace of everyday life, most of us have lost our spiritual connection to food. Food has been reduced to “fuel”- a listing of nutritional “value.” But the human body is not a machine, and many of the food-related issues that plague us, can be traced to our lack of awareness of the relationship between body and spirit. Spiritual nourishment is the concept of eating with an awareness of the mystery of life in food and connecting with it via mindfulness and appreciation.
In a test, Doctor Donald Morse of Temple University did research with female students. He asked them to meditate for 5 minutes before eating, then do mental arithmetic for 5 minutes before eating. When the students meditated, they produced 22% more of an enzyme in saliva called alpha-amylase, which helps you break down carbohydrates and B vitamins in food. This suggests that if you eat in a relaxed, mindful, present state of mind, you’ll absorb more nutrients, and in this way, may improve health. This gives new meaning to “Grace before meals”. Spiritual nutrition is about the mystery of life inherent in both food and human beings. All food contains and gives life, and we human beings are also life giving and life containing. Also, both food and human beings depend on the elements, the sun, the earth and soil, water, and air to live and thrive. Spiritual nutrition acknowledges the interdependence and connection among plants, animals, human beings, and the mystery of life, and connecting to this life force. The way to access and derive the health benefits of spiritual nutrition is to implement the three healing secrets of spiritual nutrition: mindfulness, appreciation, and love, each time you eat.
The key concept for optimal health and optimal eating is that what and how you eat hold the keys to physical, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being. Food provides us with more than the sum of its nutrients – protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, and minerals. Food is condensed and transformed energy. Eating is a way to extract life sustaining energy from food. When you eat, you process and absorb the forces of nature stored in your food. For example, plants store light through photosynthesis. Eating food releases the energies and nutrients stored in food for your body to absorb. In assimilating your food, the physical and energetic forces of your food interact with you on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels and in turn determine your health and the quality of your life.
What you choose to eat determines the quality of the nutrients and energy that you put into your body. We are affected quite differently by fresh, whole, live, organic foods compared to processed foods containing the chemicals of artificial colours and flavours, preservatives, pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics. Think of the vital energy you get from organic foods which have either been freshly harvested or which can create a plant from the whole grain when it is planted. In comparison, consider the energy you get from eating meat and processed foods which also give you pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, preservatives, and artificial flavours and colours.
In addition to digesting the food, our liver and kidneys must work
harder to process all these chemicals in meat and processed food
compared to organic food. Furthermore, when you eat meat, you take in
the animal’s energy, including the energy of how it was raised and the
fear and trauma from being slaughtered. As you change the way you eat
and become more in touch with and integrate your mind-body-spirit, your
cravings for various foods may disappear, change, or even develop.
During this process of changing the way you eat, you may face challenges
as you deal with your self- image and the emotions affecting your food
choices. You may go back to some of your old ways of eating until you
feel ready to address the underlying issues and emotions, see yourself
more clearly and bring in the healing light and energy of natural foods. These
can be gestational periods where you rest, internally restructure,
integrate, and prepare for the next set of changes by marshalling your
energy. Healing and personal development involve changing your attitudes
and beliefs about yourself and what you bring into your life to create
and sustain your health and well- being. You learn how to eat and live
in a healthy and harmonious way that aligns you with the natural laws
and ecology of your body, our planet, and the universe. These changes
and shifts occur over time and are affected by the support you choose to
bring into your life. A solid support system
is crucial for making successful, sustained, permanent changes in the
direction of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
As you experience more joy and positive ways of being, you may recognize
areas in your life that drain you and better understand what nourishes,
satisfies, and supports you. You may decide to restructure your life
and change your perspective, behaviour, relationships, and situations so
you experience life differently. You learn to honour yourself and
support your growth by choosing food, relationships, experiences,
thoughts, and behaviour that nourish and heal your body.
You transform your body into a temple
in which your spirit can live with integrity, in harmony with your mind
and body. It is not only a matter of intellectually knowing what you
should or shouldn’t eat. It’s a question of how you want and choose to
live. How to deal with your emotions. How developed, evolved, and
integrated is your mind-body-spirit entity. They need to work in harmony
to support you and enable you to consciously make healthy choices. Are
you making conscious choices about how you are living? Are you aware of
the impact of these choices? As we develop and evolve, we want to
continue integrating our mind-body-spirit. How can food support this
evolution and integration and help us mentally, emotionally and
spiritually as well as physically.
So the new you is not just a reproduction of cells. It is a complete
transformation of the tangible (body) and the intangible (thoughts). You
vibrate at a more rapid frequency which positively affects those around
you, raises your level of awareness, oneness, connection with your
inner self, nature and others. Your temple becomes more pristine and
attuned to other forces. Pay attention to whatever inspires you for it
is “spirit” trying to communicate with you. That is why it is called
“inspiration” as “in-spirit”. Listen to it, believe it and act on it.
Remember, God is a SPIRIT and those who worship him MUST worship him in spirit. AS ABOVE, SO BELOW.
